Grosses Kino in Paris: Nina Radjenovic und Maya Schärer holen das WM-Ticket

Im legendären Stadion Pierre de Coubertin in Paris, anlässlich der erstmalig durchgeführten WM-Qualifikation 2025, waren die Kämpfe geprägt von grossen Emotionen in Siegen und Niederlagen.
Nach den bereits direkt selektionierten Elena Quirici (-68 kg, 7. WM-Teilnahme) und Yuki Ujihara (Kata, 4 WM-Teilnahme) holten sich nun auch Maya Schärer (-50 kg, 4. WM-Teilnahme) und Nina Radjenovic (-61 kg, 3. WM-Teilnahme) das begehrte WM-Ticket. Mit ihnen qualifizierten sich die im WKF-Ranking am besten positionierten SKF-Karatekas. Für Maya Schärer war der Wechsel in die tiefere Gewichtskategorie die richtige Entscheidung.
Mit 14 Einzelsiegen (F: 9, M: 5) lieferten die SKF-Karatekas eine starke Leistung ab und wurden entsprechend auf den sozialen Medien gefeiert. Eric Timmer (-60 kg) verpasste seine 2. WM-Qualifikation äusserst knapp.
In Paris bewarben sich 478 Karatekas aus 93 (plus neutrale Athletinnen und Athleten) Nationen, aus vier Kontinenten, um einen der letzten sechs WM-Startplätzen pro Kategorie. Jede Kategorie wird an der WM mit maximal 32 Karatekas besetzt sein. Top-Fotos SKF: Kjetil Waber.
Und wie immer stellt sich die Frage: Was unterscheidet «potentiell WM-fähige» Karatekas von den schlussendlich «effektiv erfolgreichen» WM-Athletinnen und Athleten?
World Class Karatekas entscheiden sich für individuell-ambitionierte Karrierepläne, persönliche Trainer/Coachs und legen damit die entscheidende Grundlage für die Erreichung hoher Ziele im Leistungssport. Lösungsorientiert «Out-of-the-box» quer-denkend und handelnd sind sie bereit, an temporären Defiziten zusätzlich zu arbeiten und ihre Stärken weiter auszuprägen.
Die Nationalkader SKF umfassen im Kumite 37 Karatekas, aufgrund ihres Alters, mit der Berechtigung an einer Elite-WM teilzunemen. 3 von ihnen schafften es: Somit 8.1%. In der Kata schaffte es ein Athlet, d.h. 5%.

Never stop believing
«Road to Cairo» – the goal I set for myself two years ago.
A journey full of challenges, unexpected turns, and moments when I almost gave up…
But then came two crazy people (@raulcuervamora & @elena_quirici ) with an even crazier idea: “Let’s start over. New weight class. New chapter.”
It meant sacrifices — a brutal weight cut over summer, starting from zero in the world ranking…
But today, I can finally say — it was all worth it.
I earned my qualification, and even more importantly, I rediscovered my love and the joy for fighting
A new version of me — stronger, hungrier, and grateful for every step of this journey.

Portugal’s Catarina Rodrigues battled to a thrilling 3-3 draw against Kazakhstan’s Aigerim Tursynbekova, advancing by decision to claim one of six Cairo spots in the Female Kumite -50kg category. Insaf Bentama-Serrroukh Jebari of Spain followed with another tense 4-4 decision win over Poland’s Zuzanna Bernaciak. Thi Thu Nguyen of Vietnam moved on by ‘Hantei’ or decision after a scoreless draw (0-0) against Hong Kong China’s Tsang Yee Ting. Greece’s Christina Triada Pappa showed dominance with a clear 4-0 win over WKF-2’s Ulyana Markava. Maya Schaerer of Switzerland delivered the day’s most striking result, overpowering England’s Niamh Lilly Cosgrove 10-2. The final ticket went to Teodora Tsaneva of Bulgaria, who narrowly beat the United Arab Emirates’ Hawraa Al Ajmi 2-1.

France’s Sydney Yvon thrilled the home crowd with a narrow 2-1 victory against Anthi Stylianou of Cyprus to earn the ticket to Cairo 2025, much to the celebration of local fans. Thi Dieu Ly Nguyen from Vietnam edged past Katarzyna Lewandowska of Poland in a scoreless bout decided by hantei (referee decision). Italy’s Aurora Graziosi dominated Huang Yu Ru of Chinese Taipei 9-1, while Emina Sipovic of Bosnia and Herzegovina impressed with a commanding 9-0 win against Jasmine Pomeroy of England. Also, Switzerland’s Nina Radjenovic secured her spot after defeating Altana Basangova of WKF-1 by 1-0 in a tense, defensive match. Austria’s Lejla Topalovic followed suit with a composed 2-0 win over Lo Pui Cheng of Macau.

Schweizer Schiedsrichter
NSK-Vizepräsident Linh Pham bestand in Paris die letzte Prüfung zum WKF Kumite Referee A. Damit erreichte er die höchste Stufe wie Mirko Bisaro, Henri Jordan, Jean Luna, Piero Lüthold, Tommaso Mini und Rudi Seiler. Seine erste internationale Prüfung legte er 2015 ab. Herzliche Gratulation.
Daniel Brunner wurde von der WKF Referee Commission mit dem WKF Silver Pin für 15 Jahre unermüdliches Engagement ausgezeichnet.
